Whovention is a not-for-profit event run by Australian fans of the long running British family science-fiction drama programme Doctor Who. The show celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013, and Whovention: Gold was an Australian celebration of the milestone.
Unlike similar style conventions, Whovention is organised entirely by volunteers and takes place at irregular frequencies, meaning time, money and effort able to be devoted to branding and marketing the event has always been minimal. Apart from a brief reappearance in 2011 for a few smaller events, the 2013 event would be the first since 2005, which was organised by an almost completely different crew, meaning almost all of the previous material used to brand and market the event was out of date, if it ever existed at all.
